What does the BU modifier mean?
The HCPCS Level II modifier BU means: “The beneficiary has been informed of the purchase and rental options and after 30 days has not informed the supplier of his/her decision”. Append it to a HCPCS or CPT code on the claim line when the payer’s policy calls for it; placement and payment effects are defined by each payer.
