What is an NPI number?

The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique 10-digit number assigned to healthcare providers in the United States under HIPAA. Doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, therapists, clinics, hospitals, labs and pharmacies all use their NPI on insurance claims, prescriptions and referrals. An NPI never changes, even when a provider moves or changes specialty.

Type 1 and Type 2 NPIs

Type 1 NPIs belong to individual providers such as physicians and nurse practitioners. Type 2 NPIs belong to organizations such as group practices, hospitals, home health agencies and pharmacies. A physician who owns a practice can have both.

How to look up an NPI

Enter a 10-digit NPI to open the provider record directly, or search by first and last name, optionally narrowed to a state. You can also browse by state, city and specialty. Each record shows the practice address, phone number, taxonomy codes, license numbers and registration dates published in the NPPES registry.

Where does the data come from?

All records come from the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES), the official public NPI registry maintained by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. We import the full file every month and the weekly update files every week, so new providers appear within days of receiving their NPI.
